5 Components Of A Fire Protection System
Fire safety is an integral part of every building. A fire can spark and spread within a few moments. These systems reduce damage to expensive items and property. They also save the lives of people from danger.
The main components of fire protection in Ireland include fire alarms, fire extinguishers, automatic sprinkler systems, standpipes, hosepipes, fire doors, etc.
What are some of the components of a fire protection system?
Fire alarms- A properly installed and maintained fire alarm system can reduce the chances of a hazard and can fight with it. The fundamental reason for installing it is to send a notification or a warning to the people in case of an emergency so that they can evacuate from the building and can notify the fire services. Its basic components include- alarm initiating circuits, a fire alarm control panel, and a power supply.
Heat/ Smoke Detectors- They are primarily installed to detect heat/smoke in case of a fire. They are best suited for the detection of fires in small spaces. Heat detectors are effective in places where smoke detectors cannot work due to environmental issues. They have a fusible element type mechanism that uses an alloy that melts on attaining a fixed temperature. This causes the alloy to melt and an alarm to ring in times of fire.
Standpipes- These are rigid water piping systems that are built in a building either horizontally or vertically to which fire hoses are fitted. These serve the same purpose as a fire hydrant. There are two types of standpipes- dry standpipe and wet standpipe.
Smoke control system- A fire protection system Ireland is designed not only to stop a fire but to handle smoke effectively as it may cause serious health issues. A smoke control system prevents smoke from accumulating and removes it from a building. This system can be either mechanical or passive. Mechanical ones use a fan to control smoke, whereas passive ones use smoke barriers to limit it.
Automatic fire sprinkler- As its name suggests, an automatic fire sprinkler uses water to stop a fire without any manual labour. It is used significantly in a large building and is enough to stop a fire. These are the most common type of fire protection systems and are used all around the world.
